SPLINTS USED FOR BRUXISM, SLEEP APNEA AND ANTI-SNORING
SPLINTS USED FOR ANTI-SNORING AND SLEEP APNEA
Many patients are not aware of the fact that they have sleep apnea (only 10-20% of the total are diagnosed). Sleep apnea consists of a decrease in oxygen saturation in the blood. During sleep, the relaxation of the respiratory musculature causes a decrease in respiratory flow causing episodes of respiratory arrest. Depending on the number and time these interruptions last, it is indicated the use of devices that produce a mandibular advance to increase the respiratory flow and reduce the number of apneas, improving nighttime rest.
It is also known that patients with dental bruxism (dental grinding) has a direct relationship with the episodes of sleep apnea, and vice versa, being one more reason to be studied by different specialists. It requires the participation of the specialists of the sleep unit and orthodontics treatment.
TEMPOROMANDIBULAR ARTICULATION PROBLEMS
Increasingly frequent, the disorders associated with the temporomandibular joint directly influence other pathological processes such as headaches, buzzing, neck pain, etc.
The realization of a correct diagnosis (detailed clinical history, muscular palpation, assembly in articulator, X-rays, CT, MRI, etc.) and an accurate treatment for each type of disorder, allow the patient to recover the “quality of life” lost.
